Colby's "Eye Games" & Another Triathlon

Last year we noticed that Colby's right eye doesn't move in sync with his left one, and it gets especially bad when he is really tired. We can tell him "Colby, look with your two eyes!" and he can make it go back straight, but if he's not paying attention that eye will float off to the side a bit. I took him to a specialist last summer and they determined that he has something called "Convergence Insufficiency" and gave us some exercises to strengthen that eye. About 9 months later we felt like it wasn't getting worse, but it also wasn't getting much better. Another solution we'd heard about was "vision therapy" which is basically a video game that makes them use both eyes in sync to play. This Spring we searched around and found that nobody in Las Cruces does vision therapy. Two places in El Paso do, but they both got less-than-stellar reviews, and I didn't want to have to drive all the way to El Paso every week or two for mediocre help. I did a bunch of research and found a company online that offers at-home vision therapy. However, they were based in Europe and recently lost their license to ship to the U.S. (due to politics -- U.S. eye doctors want the $$ from patients having to come to their office rather than do it at home). Luckily, we're thinkers. I went ahead and ordered it and shipped it to my friend in Spain, who then shipped it to me here. It arrived the end of April and we got Colby started.

The Saturday after we got home from Peru I had my 2nd triathlon, this time in El Paso, Texas. A couple of my friends were also doing it, so we got a hotel the night before so that we wouldn't have to wake up at 4am.

The morning of the triathlon was cold and windy, but we were all set! This one was a shorter swim than the last one (300 yards), a longer bike (18.2 miles) and a 5k run again. I figured this would be good for me because I'm a better biker than I am swimmer, by a long shot! However, because biking an extra 4 miles makes a longer race than swimming that extra 100 yards, my goal was to just get less than 2 hours on this race.

I ended up getting 1:59:35.2, so...win! I backstroked the entire swim again, made up some time on the bike portion, and then died on the run. My legs cramped so bad. I really need to work on the transition from bike to run.

I'm super proud of all 4 of us! It's really fun to get out and do hard things together.
